OK, I'm looking into this Nov or next MArch/April. Probably the latter, since so many of my favorite people are already booked up for November.

I mean, I was sitting with Steven Eggers at the Oasis studio informing him that I required his presence at HoF, and he said, "if he's back in time from Europe." Sheesh. Like Hips of Fury here in the Antelope Valley isn't WAY BETTER than stupid ole Germany. ;)

May 03, 2009-- TEHACHAPI--Mountain Tribal Chapter's "SHAMAN'S VISION" show returns by popular demand! The theme of this visionary dance theatre event will be "Pagan Pathways". Once again the poetry will guide the scenario as dancers perform interpretations of the "Pagan Pathways" story-line using their own musical selections. Dance styles can include tribal, gothic, story-dance, fusion, and dance of India or Asia. There will be opportunities for those who have special performances outside of the "scenario", including ethnic and traditional cabaret. WORKSHOPS with world famous UNMATA'S Amy Sigil and multi-award winning SAAHIRA, Sorceress of the Emerald Winds, highlight the day's schedule. VENDORS! Fee is still only $30! Extra table $5. Taking a Year Off

It's true. No Hips of Fury this year. Lots of reasons, including getting screwed by our venue so we will never ever go back there again, and not being able to find an affordable one for this year, having another quality Alternative show move to the spot we normally used (because someone moved in on their usual spot), but had vacated last year because of venue scheduling problems, having another quality alternative show the same weekend we moved to last year (they'd been there a few years, and we didn't realize), having another local competition start including alternative styles as soon as HoF was started, oversaturation, etc.

Hopefully we'll be able to do it in Aug 09. Mark your calendars. :)

In the meantime, support Wiggles of the West, EEMED, and other small-company quality events. Some of my very favorite shows EVAR are the ones produced by fellow belly dancers. (Especially the ones who are doing so in an effort to elevate the art form more than just trying to make a buck)

This is not a festival per se, it's an intensive. Or immersion rather.. where you'll get individualized attention and shared group experience deepening over the course of 3- or 5 days droppin into the dance together! Come immerse yourself in the culture, the music, the bay area bohemian bellydance underworld that is shaping the tribal fusion explosion world wide. Experience where it all began. Learn from some of the pioneers in the field, meet the musicians too, who are shaping the culture and dance! , Dive in, and see how it inspires YOU! In addition to lots of technique and dance training, there are special workshops/lectures on context, history, evolution of tribal fusion bellydance, Core Yoga specifically for dancers, hang out at our local hot spots, workshops on costuming, aesthetic, creating true fusion choreography, and developing your own style, panel discussions on the collaboration between dancers and musicians, with some of your favorite musicians and dancers shaping the art form, lots of performances, and yes, even vending! by some of the bay area's hottest designers...

Hey all, this is last minute but I'm desperate and thought I'd ask. Is anyone else going to HoF with kids? I've had life craziness lately and had originally planned on going to HoF. But then shit happened and I've had to give up dancing totally- cold turkey. Anyone who knows me knows how hard this is. Ugh. Anyway, do you think a four and a half year old would have anyone to play with? Or would anyone be willing to earn some $ babysitting during workshops? We could put her to work as child labor, LOL.

OK, so as I said before, if the categories that are currently open don't fill up, we'll open up te full ones to fill the day.

Here are the standings, so get your bum over to www.hipsoffury.net and sign up!!:

Ultimate Soloist- 5

Remember it's only forty bucks this year (which means we've LOWERED the entrance fee) to enter any solo category besides the Ultimate Soloist. There is a trophy and a check waiting for the winner of each category. (Faizeh's Choice Solo has NO entries so far. I am in shock)

I keep hearing from lots of people that they're "planning" on competing. That's great! It doesn't count until you get your name on my list. :)

If you haven't competed at Hips of Fury before, you should consider it. It is such a positive and supportive vibe, which isn't true of many competitions.

Waiting lists, etc

By the way, you'll want to still be on the waiting list if the category you want to enter is full. A couple reasons for this:

1. We usually have at least one entrant each year back out, and it might be in the category you want!

2. If, by Sept 23 all the spots are not full in the other categories, we will re-open the full categories to fill the day. Obviously, those on the waiting list will be the first to be secured a competition slot.

Troupe Categories

OK, I'm not trying to start a panic or anything, but I just thought y'all should know.

I've had WAY WAY more people inquiring about the troupe categories than there are open slots. Now, I know that people ask and then never do anything about it, but I'm talking like three times as many queries as slots. So, if you're serious about being a part of the competition, and I know most of you are, you might consider securing your spot sooner rather than later. Just sayin'.

By the way, I am talking about BOTH troupe categories here. It's a good thing we added another troupe category this year!!

And if I am able, I will let y'all know like I usually do when the openings are getting low. But I usually get flurries, so a category might fill up all of a sudden while I'm gone at the grocery store.

Hiplash on YouTube Finally!!

In case anyone didn't realize that this is what the "little ditty" post was about...

Soooo, here's what you all (okay, maybe not "all" but *some* of you, or at least a *few* of you) have been waiting for!!!

Hiplash finally has a video on YouTube!! Yay!!!! I am so excited! The video is of our performance at the monthly showcase, TaXim in Eagle Rock, CA. It was so much fun, and I think we had a pretty good show. Solace played live music, which was amazing as usual. We even had an encore presentation after the crowd shouted for us to come back out! (well, they were shouting... hmm, maybe they were saying something else?) ;)

Tribal Fusion Choreography/combos.

Atash Maya is known for using Techniques within Improvisation combos and choreography in a way that is much like a martial arts practice.
The Choreography/combos that will be taught will contain well described and broken down techniques that when practiced, similar to how a Kung fu form is practiced will eventually aid the dancer in perfection of that or those techniques within the combos.
You will learn a series of three technically packed phrases equaling a 3.5 minute show set. The phrases of movement can be swapped mixed slowed sped up, repeated and can be used within your own musical choices, not just married to one piece of music like many workshops of this type.
You will be able to use what you gain from this workshop for Improvisational solos, group performances, and private home practice. This workshop also focuses on performance projection practice, muscle memory drills, and reprogramming of bad muscle memory habits in order to eventually bring the dancer clean technique, captivating stage presents, and grace

Questions about the Ultiamte Soloist

So I've gotten a coupla questions about the style of the Ultiamte Soloist.

This category is not one specific style, aside from it should be an Alternative style (this is, after all, an Alternative Style competition!)

Basically you can do tribal fusion, fuse Latin dance with belly dance (a la Kristina Canizares, our first Ultimate Soloist), fuse athleticism with belly dance (a la Shabnam, last year's Ultimate Soloist), do a storytelling piece...etc.

So, for all the Gothic gals on the waiting list- you CAN enter the Ultimate Soloist category if you want to participate this year!! :)

Want to add to your tribal vocabulary? Learn new moves with the ATS concept of lead and follow developed with non-verbal cues. Fr餩rique has created new Urban Tribal moves that have been inspired by a variety of ancient and modern dances with fundamental roots in ATS and Cabaret stylized belly dance. Something I have found odd

So, every year that we've had Hips of Fury, the Ultimate Soloist category has been the first to fill up, and always has had the longest waiting list.

This year, every category has entrants, and as you know, the Gothic category is now taking a waiting list.

Every category except the Ultimate Soloist.

It doesn't have anyone signed up yet!

This is the category that jump-started Kristina Canizares' career. This is the soloist category that the winner gets to dance in the Evening Show, and possibly be on the DVD.

No one yet. Weird.

I wonder what idea will be completely overlooked this year.

You WILL be receiving your score sheets. Every year I learn more ways to make this event
better, and last year I discovered it would probably be a good idea to keep a copy, just in case. So, I'm going to photocopy them and then mail them out. You should be getting them some time next week.

Blinded by the costume

So, I was talking to Zahra last week, and we got talking about cabaret vs. fusion, and she was referring to a really beautiful dancer who I had always thought of as a cabaret dancer. But then she pointed out what she was fusing belly dance with and I realized that she was absolutely right, she WAS doing Fusion, but I had been so hung up on the Oriental moves combined with the Egyptian costume that I had completely overlooked the other aspects of her dance...which actually made me realize the talent it took to so seamlessly fuse these elements together.

But I was disappointed in myself for paying attention only to the costume.

Have you ever overlooked something amazing because you were so blinded by your OWN preconceived ideas?

Eureka--They found it...but....anyone live in Palmdale????

Hello Everyone--
I was ecstatic to hear from the folks at the Larry Chimbole Cultural Center (the HOF venue) that my bag of MAC Makeup and professional brushes was found there!!! Woohooo!!!! Yeah!!!! No need to spend $300 to replace everything in my collection of performance makeup!!!
The only problem is that I live in the LA South Bay and it would be hard to make the 2 hour drive to pick it up during their office hours. They won't mail left items (grrrr...but understandeable, I guess). Sooooo, I'm wondering if I might pay one of you who lives in Palmdale to run the errand for me. The center hours are 8 am-10 pm Monday-Thursday;
8 am-4:30 pm Friday, and I would mail you a padded stamped and addressed padded envelope which you could then drop at the Post office for me. How about $40 for what I figure is about a 1 hour errand....cash, check, Paypal, gift certificate...whatever you prefer...:-). I really miss my makeup!!!
